About the Artist:

Veteran Bio Dennis Richards was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After graduating from high school in 1975, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1976 to 1979. During his time in the Navy, he was stationed in San Diego, California, and completed two overseas West Pac tours. He also participated in the radiological cleanup at Enewetak Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, a significant and demanding assignment that contributed to the ongoing recovery of the region following nuclear testing. While traveling during his service, Dennis purchased his first film camera in Japan, sparking an early interest in photography. Artist Bio Photography became an important part of Dennis Richards’ life after retiring from a more than thirty-year career in law enforcement. After decades of structured work and responsibility, he found himself drawn back to the camera and to the quiet beauty of the natural world. Purchasing a Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera marked the beginning of a new creative journey. For Dennis, photography offers an opportunity to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the outdoors. After retirement, he felt a strong pull to spend more time in nature and to capture the landscapes, wildlife, and moments that often go unnoticed in everyday life. The camera became a way to explore new scenery while reflecting on the path that brought him there. While Dennis is especially inspired by the natural environment, he photographs anything that captures his attention or tells a story. His images are guided by curiosity and a desire to share what he sees with others. Through his work, Dennis hopes viewers will walk alongside him and experience the beauty of the outdoors through his eyes.
